Siemens Oil & Gas Consulting recently organized two well-received PSM workshops in Doha, Qatar, and Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. Workshops focused on safety systems and covered various aspects of pressure relief systems design, lifecycle solutions, evergreen pressure relief information and an introduction of the latest release of PS PPM pressure relief device software. Nitin Talreja, Ahmer Irshad and Ahsan Yousufzai gave presentations and led the discussions.
Workshops were attended by representatives of 14 different oil, gas and petrochemical companies and their affiliates, including Saudi Aramco, SABIC and Qatar Petroleum. The workshops provided attendees a platform to discuss and exchange the latest trends in PSM, and they helped propagate Siemens reputation as a valuable source of PSM expertise within the region.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates don’t extend past the U.S. and these workshops helped enhance the safety awareness of these overseas facilities.
“A lot of people aren’t aware of how changes in day-to-day operations impact their relief and flare systems design,” says Talreja, practice manager for the consulting business, which is based in Houston, Texas.
He predicts that because of the workshops, and especially the one held in Qatar, a number of attendees are going to take a deeper look at their safety systems and enact serious changes.
Attendees praised Siemens efforts as highly valuable and informative. Irshad, a senior consultant with Siemens Oil & Gas, says that the audience understood that the observations and standards that OSHA mandates within the U.S. are giving them a means to achieve safety within their plant by adopting these best practices, without having to worry about inspections.
“More importantly, the participants saw the business benefits of a structured program that could increase their bottom line,” says Irshad.
Irshad and Talreja said they hope similar workshops in the Middle East can become an annual event, and that Siemens Oil & Gas Consulting plans to establish an operations base in the area.
